SISTER CONNECTIONS

Lauren Welch

With this series, I wanted to explore my identity as a sister. I am the second oldest
of four girls, with the ages ranging from 12 to 20. I wanted to highlight connections I share with each of them, especially reflecting on our being in different stages of life. For each image I would photograph a sister in a setting that feels natural to them, and then take and edit another photo that I could incorporate into theirs that would represent their current focus in life.
Emma (who is older than me) wants a vacation from the growing pressures of being an adult. I chose to overlay pictures I’ve taken at a beach with her in our yard and leaning against her car. Erin (16 years old) and I relate over our interests in podcasts. We’ve especially bonded over our love of certain fantasy ones, so I made her environment seem just a bit more magical, as our imaginations tend to see things. With Lucy (who is 12), she has become obsessed with the same book series I loved growing up. Reading for her, like it was for me, is a favorite pastime and joy, that I presented with the comfort of words on a page in an overlay. With myself, I think that a strong connection I have to both my sisters and my identity is art. In both pictures I’ve incorporated my artwork into a space with me. I feel like I’ve been an influence on my sister’s who have all played with various art forms, despite being very different from me. Being part of a relatively big family of sisters is an important aspect of my identity, and I hope these pieces convey the passions and bonds we share.
